Tonota FC maintains top spot

19 Oct 2026

Tonota FC continued their good starting run to the FNB Premiership season with a 2-0 victory over Police XI to maintain the top place of the table.

The match was played before a good number of supporters at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown, who cheered the home side from the first whistle to the last.

Motsholetsi Sikele gave the home side an early lead in the 9th minute, setting the tone for a dominant display characterised by desire and determination.

Police XI, who came into the match boasting one of the meanest defences in the league, struggled to contain the league leaders.

The victory was sealed in the dying minutes of the second half when Emmanuel Timu doubled the lead in the 86th minute, sending the home fans into jubilant celebration.

The result extends Tonota FC’s unbeaten run to six matches, with four wins and two draws, accumulating 14 points and going clear at the summit of the FNB Premiership.

Speaking after the match, Tonota FC head coach Thatayaone Sonny expressed happiness with his players’ effort.

He commended them for the two goals and the display against a side that rarely concedes.

“We tried to contain them as coming into this game, we knew it was not going to be easy playing against a team that is very stubborn when it comes to conceding,” Coach Sonny said.

He also said they worked more on getting goals and ended up scoring two goals in a game that they created fewer chances as compared to the last game, hence they were happy with a win and the three points that came with it.

On the other hand, Police XI coach, Tony Serumola, acknowledged that his side did not start well in the first half.

He cited a congested fixture schedule, having played three games in the space of four days, though he stressed that it was not an excuse.

“In the second half we were the better side after introducing fresh legs,” Serumola said.

He added that the loss was water under the bridge, saying he trusts his team which is made up of young stars.

“There are still more games to go and losing two games in a row won’t shake us. We will be more focused and motivated to do better,” he said.

Meanwhile, in another encounter played at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown, Mochudi Centre Chiefs beat Enesia FC by 2-1.

Other FNB Premiership matches played on Saturday afternoon also produced interesting results.

Gaborone United beat Nico United 2-0 away, Orapa United stunned Jwaneng Galaxy 2-0, Sua Flamingoes edged BDF XI 1-0, while Morupule Wanderers and Prisons XI played to a goalless draw.
