An enhanced cooperation between the legislatures of Botswana and China will provide legal backing for growing bilateral cooperation.
President Advocate Duma Boko remarked during a meeting in Beijing, with the National People's Congress Standing Committee, chairperson and China's top legislator, Mr Zhao Leji, reaffirming Botswana's commitment to its relations with China.
"Botswana attaches great importance to developing friendly relations with China and firmly abides by the one-China principle," said President Boko.
He was hopeful that the two legislative bodies would enhance exchanges and deepen cooperation in capacity-building, personnel training and other fields.
Mr Zhao described Botswana as an important partner for China in Southern Africa.
"Botswana is China's important partner in Southern Africa, and China stands ready to work with Botswana to deliver on the important consensus reached by the two heads of state," said Mr Zhao.
He added that the NPC was ready to strengthen cooperation with the Parliament of Botswana to support practical cooperation.
"The NPC stands ready to strengthen cooperation with the parliament of Botswana, carry out experience-sharing on democracy and rule-of-law development, and provide legal safeguards for bilateral practical cooperation," he said.
The meeting forms part of President Boko's six-day state visit to China, which has seen bilateral ties elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership. ENDS
