Gastronomic festival to promote cultural Ties

13 Oct 2026

The Embassy of Angola in Botswana will host the inaugural Angolan Gastronomic Festival on October 17 at The Place Endaweni in Phakalane, using food, music and dance to promote cultural exchange between the two countries.

Billed as “Culinary Diplomacy,” the initiative forms part of the embassy’s cultural diplomacy efforts, seeking to bring the peoples of Angola and Botswana closer through traditional cuisine and artistic expression.

The festival will place Angolan gastronomy at the centre of a cultural exchange experience, showcasing the flavours, local products and traditions that define the country’s culinary identity while promoting mutual understanding, cultural diversity and stronger bilateral ties.

Organisers said the event is intended to be more than a food festival. It will provide a platform for interaction and cultural sharing, offering Batswana and other communities living in Botswana an opportunity to discover Angola through its cuisine, music and dance.

Angola’s culinary heritage reflects the cultural diversity of its regions, with traditional recipes and cooking knowledge passed down through generations. Local ingredients, family traditions and community practices have shaped a rich gastronomic identity that the embassy hopes to share with audiences in Botswana.

The festival will feature some of Angola’s iconic dishes, including funje, dried-meat calulu, fish calulu, bean kizaca, muamba kizaca, chicken muamba, cabidela and meadungo.

The dishes will offer guests an opportunity to explore Angola’s diverse culinary traditions, complemented by performances showcasing the country’s music and dance.

Through the inaugural event, the Embassy of Angola seeks to demonstrate the role of culture in fostering closer relations between nations and their people.

Gastronomy, organisers said, could serve as a universal language that encourages dialogue, sparks curiosity about different cultures and creates connections through shared experiences.

Food has long provided a natural meeting point for communities, allowing people from different backgrounds to interact and learn from one another. For Angola and Botswana, such cultural encounters offer an opportunity to deepen people-to-people relations and strengthen regional ties.

The embassy hopes the festival will lay the foundation for a lasting tradition of cultural exchange in Botswana, enabling visitors to experience Angola’s heritage through its food, music and dance. ENDS
