First aid vital in mining operations

This year’ Botswana Chamber of Mines Inter-Mine First Aid Competitions provided a platform for strengthening emergency preparedness in the mining industry, bringing together participating teams at Life Centre Hall in Maun to demonstrate the importance of lifesaving skills in high-risk working environments.
Hosted by MMG Khoemacau, the annual event was held under the theme: First Aid in Migration Contexts, drawing attention to the need for emergency response systems that accommodate workers from diverse backgrounds and ensure that assistance is accessible when medical emergencies arise.
The competition brought together representatives of the mining industry, local leadership and other stakeholders.
The exercises provided participating teams with an opportunity to demonstrate their preparedness, apply their knowledge and work together in responding to emergencies.
Such exercises also help identify areas requiring improvement while encouraging the continued development of skills needed to protect workers.
The theme placed particular emphasis on the importance of inclusive emergency preparedness. In workplaces where employees may come from different communities or countries, effective first aid response requires systems that serve everyone, regardless of their background.
The event also highlighted the importance of the initial response following an incident.
Recognising an emergency, securing the scene, assisting casualties appropriately and facilitating access to further medical care are all essential links in the chain of survival.
Delivering the keynote address, Pula Med principal officer, Dr Khumoetsile Mapitse, stated that the first few minutes of an emergency could determine whether a casualty survived, particularly when professional responders were not immediately available.
He also stressed that initial assistance needed to be supported by access to appropriate medical treatment.
For his part, Botswana Chamber of Mines CEO, Mr Charles Siwawa, highlighted the broader ambition of making first aid an essential skill in workplaces, households and communities.
Meanwhile, the competition concluded with Jwaneng Mine Team B taking first place and walking away with the competition champions trophy and gold medal, followed by Jwaneng Mine Team A in second position with silver medal and Lucara Botswana in third with bronze medal. ENDS
