Embrace Digital Shift - Official

Local artistes have been urged to leverage a burgeoning 24-hour economy and digital innovations to take their crafts to global heights.

Speaking at an Independence Eve and Vintage Day pre-activity held on Tuesday ahead of the 60th independence celebrations, Kanye district commissioner, Mr Mompoloki Mochanang said indicated that the country’s economy was expanding, anchored by the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP) and National Development Plan 12 (NDP 12).

Mr Mochanang noted that government intended to digitalise all public services by November next year, to pave way for a 24-hour economy comprising various jobs and sectors.

In light of such developments, he urged artistes and residents to understand the economic theme and apply it to their work.

He explained that the theme, Building Resilience, Driving Prosperity, implored individuals to endure challenges and stand the test of time.

Kanye District Council chairperson, Mr Morapedi Kgosithebe emphasised the bond between national identity and creative expression, noting that the arts industry value chain sustained livelihoods.

“There is no way we can talk about our nation without talking about the Arts,” said Mr Kgosithebe.

He acknowledged that many still looked down on the performing arts under the misconception that they cannot provide a living.

As such, he urged artistes to take pride in their skills and treat them as serious professions.

Local gospel musician, Mr One Mosele, said the event remindered them of how far the creative sector had evolved.

Mr Mosele however reflected on the contrast between early industry conditions and today’s professional landscape.

“Performing arts have grown since independence. In the past, performing artistes were rewarded with food or alcohol,” he said.

He thanked government for its continued efforts in promoting and supporting local talent during the historic milestone.

He indicated that technology was a game-changer for modern creators, noting how digital platforms had broken down traditional geographic boundaries.

“The use of social media has helped to promote artists. In the past, artistes were only known in their surroundings, but today they have the opportunity to international markets,” he added.

Meanwhile, the pre-activity not only gave local artistes a platform to showcase their talents and reflect on the country’s journey since independence, but it also underscored a shared vision that the next decade of prosperity would be driven equally by economic resilience and a thriving creative sector. ends
