GABORONE

President Daniel Chapo of Mozambique and First Lady, Ms Gueta Chapo are in Gaborone for a state visit, highlighted by his role as the guest of honour at Botswana’s 60th Independence Day Celebrations tomorrow.

Accompanied by a delegation of ministers, senior government officials and business leaders, President Chapo’s visit underscores the enduring bonds of friendship and solidarity between the two nations, particularly as 2026 marks the 51st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

A press release from the Office of the President says during the visit, President Chapo and his delegation will also engage in a packed schedule aimed at deepening economic, political and historical ties. 

On Monday, the two Presidents held official bilateral talks to strengthen strategic partnerships and witness the signing of key agreements finalised during the recent 9th session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (JPCC) held in Gaborone. 

Also, President Chapo co-officiated the Botswana-Mozambique Business Forum, meant to foster cooperation in trade and investment, agriculture, energy, tourism and transport and logistics. 

According to a press release, he is expected to visit the Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) and the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) within the diamond and beef sectors, alongside a visit to the Samora Machel Museum.

The state visit also features a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Parliament Grounds to honour long-standing historical ties. 

President Chapo arrived yesterday and will participate in key BOTS60 engagements leading up to Wednesday’s (tomorrow’s) national celebrations. ENDS
