Learners of Lehutshelo Junior Secondary School have been implored to dream big and work hard towards what they aspired to become.

Speaking at the school’s prize giving ceremony recently, Gaborone Institute of Professional Studies (GIPS) marketing officer Ms Kaons Motswagae encouraged the learners to embrace hard work and discipline as part of efforts aimed at them excelling academically.

Ms Motswagae urged them who received prizes not to become complacent because of their achievements, but to use their success as motivation to aim higher.

For his part, school head of Lehutshelo Junior Secondary School, Mr Thabo Mosalakgoko, said the school was performing well in extracurricular activities, particularly in debate where learners had won numerous certificates and prizes.

Mr Mosalakgoko emphasised the importance of stakeholder collaboration in supporting the school and urged alumni to contribute to the development of current learners.

He said such collaboration should be normalised to ensure that learners acquired the skills and support needed to excel in academic programmes, particularly those that required sponsorship.

He said while he appreciated prize giving ceremonies for recognising high-performing learners, he believed that the rest of the learners should also be recognised and encouraged to improve their academic performance.

Mr Mosalakgoko said such recognition could motivate struggling learners, noting that many learners were currently experiencing challenges in their studies and therefore needed encouragement to work harder.

He also appealed to parents to contribute towards the school’s development fees, saying the funds would be used to improve the school and create a more conducive learning environment.

He acknowledged that government was facing financial constraints, but urged parents and other stakeholders to assist where possible with the resources at their disposal to support learners and improve their chances of succeeding.

Mr Mosalakgoko said Lehutshelo JSS had recorded notable improvements in its results over the past three years.

He said the school recorded 23.9 per cent in 2023, placing fourth in the region, before improving to 42.6 per cent in 2024 to claim first position.  In 2025, the school recorded 35 per cent and retained its position as the regional top performer.

Mr Mosalakgoko said the school was determined to build on the progress and improve its performance further this year.

He said the school currently recorded 33.2 per cent in its internal and mock examinations, adding that the number of learners performing at U grade had declined from 82 at the end of May to 47 in the mock examinations.

Kgosi Merapelo Tshweneyagae attributed the good performance of the school to the collective responsibility of parents, teachers and learners. ENDS
