Govt ramps up horticulture to cushion economy
24 Sep 2026
Government has taken a strategic decision to aggressively develop Botswana’s horticulture sector to help diversify an economy currently hard-hit by a decline in the diamond market. Speaking during a recent North East District full council session, general manager of Letsema Horticultural Market, Mr Ratsela Molefe stated that while Botswana had no absolute control over the global diamond market, the country can fully manage and grow its local agricultural capacity. “When we talk in terms of value in this sector, in the context of the republic, we are talking about a multi-billion Pula industry.” He expressed regret, however, that the financial benefits of the massive industry had not yet trickled down to the average small and medium-scale Motswana farmer.
