BPC targets P25b revenue by 2031

15 Sep 2026

The Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) is targeting P25 billion in revenue by 2030-31 as it embarks on a new strategy aimed at strengthening financial sustainability, expanding renewable energy and positioning the utility as a regional power-market leader.

Speaking at the launch of the 2026–2031 corporate strategy, BPC Chief Executive Officer David Kgoboko said the new strategy was built on progress made over the past five years while addressing remaining financial challenges.

Mr Kgoboko said BPC’s attainment of its first-ever ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 certifications was a major milestone.

“Now, we have taken a bold step to be recognised as an ISO organisation,” he said, adding that the certifications reflected BPC’s commitment to protecting its people and the environment.

He said safety performance had improved significantly, with the lost-time injury frequency rate falling from 0.34 to 0.11, while the total recordable injury frequency rate declined from 1.14 to 0.21.

Mr Kgoboko also highlighted improved generation performance, saying BPC increased its contribution to national electricity requirements from 67 per cent last year to a record 86 per cent in the first quarter of 2026/27.

Meanwhile, BPC Strategy and Transformation Acting Manager Onkgopotse Ramohube said the strategy would focus on five priorities, including a reliable electricity grid, zero harm, regional power-market leadership and financial resilience.

“We want to diversify our revenue streams, expand renewable energy and pursue regional energy-trading opportunities,” Ramohube said.

He said the long-term ambition was to reduce Botswana’s reliance on electricity imports and position the country to export power. ENDS
