Mosomane Writes Her Way from Pain To Purpose

15 Sep 2026

At 39, Aobakwe Lebikwe Mosomane has transformed her experience of living with albinism and visual impairment into a powerful message of hope, resilience and self-acceptance.
Growing up in Ramotswa, Mosomane says life was not always easy.
She experienced stigma, misconceptions, stares, name-calling and being underestimated because of her appearance and visual impairment.
“Reading and moving around safely also presented challenges for me however, rather than allowing these experiences to define me, I chose to turn my pain into purpose,” she says.
Her journey is now captured in her motivational book: Lebikwe’s Light, which she describes as a 100-per cent personal account of her life, from childhood and school to adulthood.
The book explores her scars, struggles, triumphs, faith and the lessons she learnt along the way.
Mosomane says she was inspired to write after young people with disabilities told her that her story gave them hope.
A defining moment came in Zimbabwe when, while involved in the organisation and sponsorship of Mr and Mrs Albinism Southern Africa through her events company, Lebikwe’s Palace Pty Ltd, she met a contestant who had been bullied at university and was considering quitting.
After sharing her story with the young woman, she was told, “If you made it, maybe I can too.”
“That night I started writing,” Mosomane recalls.
She says writing was emotional, with some days spent crying and others feeling liberated.
“Ultimately, it helped me forgive, heal and understand that difficult experiences could have a purpose,” she says.
Through Lebikwe’s Light, Mosomane hopes to inspire people who feel broken, unseen or limited, particularly people with disabilities, students and young women.
“You are not your disability, you are not your diagnosis, you are light,” she says.
The book is set to launch on November 7. ENDS
