Letsile and Bednarek showdown Sunday
11 Sep 2026
An explosive showdown is guaranteed at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship at Budapest, Hungary on Sunday after Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo and American rival, Kenny Bednarek were drawn adjacent to each other in the 200-metre semi-final.
Under the unique regulation format of the Ultimate Championship, sprinters were permitted to select their own heats and lanes based on their ranking draft order.
Bednarek acted first by securing lane five, and in a bold move that immediately caught the track world's attention, Tebogo did not hesitate to select lane six in the very same heat, setting up a direct, shoulder to shoulder clash.
Athletics pundits have widely interpreted the fast-tracked selection as an assertive statement of intent from the Olympic champion, signalling that Tebogo is fiercely motivated to assert his dominance over 200m. The semifinal will be at 6.44pm.
The World Athletics Ultimate Championship, which is held from September 11 to 13, has brought together Olympic Champions, World Champions and Diamond League winners. ENDS
