Princess Marina Hospital’s Breast and Endocrine Unit has received a donation of essential medical consumables from Botswana Medical Aid Society (Bomaid). 

The donation comprised of 480 biopsy needles and 576 portovac drains. 

Receiving the donation on behalf of the hospital’s Breast and Endocrine Unit on Tuesday, Dr Nkhabe Chinyepi said the essential medical consumables would support the delivery of healthcare services by contributing toward surgical recovery of patients and postoperative management. 

 “What you did today is that you are not only supporting patients, you are also investing in the surgeons who will care for our patients in the future. You are helping us align with global standards,” she said. 

Princess Marina Hospital acting Superintendent, Dr Mosimanegape Nkwane said the donation was an all-rounded package and would assist in cutting referral of patients.

 For his part, Assistant Minister of Health, Mr Lawrence Ookeditse said the donated 480 True-cut biopsy needles were valued at P187, 000. 

“In addition, we have received 576 Portovac drains which cost about P89,280. When you consider the message that is sent with the donation, then the impact is even more exponential,” he said. 

Appreciating the donation, Mr Ookeditse said the healthcare system continued to face challenges relating to among others shortage of essential medical consumables. He said shortage of the necessary healthcare consumables made it difficult to timely provide effective healthcare and support. 

Despite the challenging work environment, Mr Ookeditse applauded healthcare personnel for their dedication, patience and commitment in serving patients and providing health services. 

Bomaid Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr Moraki Mokgosana said it was important to support government efforts, challenging other entities in the corporate space to also step in as corporate citizens, whether it was in education or in the health sector. 

Mr Mokgosana emphasised on collective responsibility, adding that supporting government initiatives would go a long way in strengthening the country’s health care system. ENDS
