Aquaculture Consultancy Botswana and Ba Isago University have partnered to host the inaugural Botswana Aquaculture Connect 2026 seminar, an initiative aimed at transforming the country’s fish farming sector from subsistence practice into a commercial agribusiness.

The one-day event set for tomorrow at the Ba Isago University Campus in Mau, would be held under the theme, Building a Resilient Fish Value Chain in Botswana. 

It is expected to gather government officials, farmers, manufacturers, researchers and financiers to address critical challenges and explore commercial opportunities within the sector.

In an interview, Aquaculture Consultancy Botswana founder, Mr Seloilwe Seloilwe, noted that Botswana currently imported more than 90 per cent of the fish consumed locally.

“Through panel discussions, technical presentations and open networking, participants will align on strategies to build stronger linkages across the value chain, improve technical capacity at the farm level, and support policy decisions that drive food security,” Mr Seloilwe said.The seminar would also serve as a precursor to the launch of an accredited short course in fish farming on October 3 at the Maun campus. 

Developed in partnership with Ba Isago University and submitted to the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) for accreditation, the practical course aimed to equip youth, aspiring entrepreneurs and current farmers with hands-on skills.

Mr Seloilwe also said his organisation had engaged the Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) to consider zoning dedicated land for an aquaculture hub. 

The proposal, he said, outlined a state-of-the-art international facility featuring a hatchery, modern reticulation systems, a fish canning plant and accommodation.

Botswana Fish Farmers Association member, Apostle Crossland Shama, said local farmers currently produced less than 500 tonnes annually and fell far short of market demand.

“Many people are keen to venture into fish farming but lack the know-how. This is a call for us as association members and aspiring farmers to step up and increase production. The seminar and training course provide the structured support we need to enhance our skills,” he said. ENDS
