The construction of a shopping mall in Jwaneng Central Business District (CBD) is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of the 2026/27 financial year. A collaboration between Jwaneng Town Council (JTC) and MSDM Pty (Ltd), forms part of the council’s broader strategic initiatives intended to drive developments through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.

Addressing a full council meeting on Tuesday, Jwaneng mayor, Mr Ronica Ntsimako noted that JTC recently entered into a 30-year lease agreement with the developer and that the mall designs had been conditionally approved. 

He said that beyond the wide range of facilities and services, the project also brought with it hundreds of job opportunities.

“This landmark project will introduce a wide range of facilities to our township, such as commercial, retail, hospitality, offices and medical services, all under one roof. Beyond infrastructure, it promises significant employment opportunities, with over 200 jobs during the construction phase and close to 400 permanent jobs once the mall is operational,” he said.

Additionally, the mayor noted that the council recently entered into an agreement with Jwaneng Mine and Botswana Oil Limited towards the development of a Truck Staging facility in Jwaneng, the designs of which, were at the final stage. 

He said while the project would be a logistics hub intended to support mining operations, it also aligned with the government’s Community Economic Empowerment Policy. 

He said the facility was expected to enhance operational efficiency, promote effective management of traffic and prioritise safety for truckers.“This project is expected to reduce risks associated with the improper parking of trucks while delivering significant economic value by creating over 70 construction jobs and 50 permanent jobs once it is operational,” he noted.

He further underscored the need for stakeholders to collaborate towards the economic transformation of the township to meet emerging challenges through modern and innovative strategies. 

Mr Ntsimako said while plans were underway to complete due processes to drive the Investment Strategy, it was important for the private sector and development partners to join hands with the government and communities.

“Our journey towards economic transformation must be a shared journey. By working together, we can diversify Jwaneng’s economy, support local enterprises, attract investment, unlock underutilised assets and create sustainable revenue streams that will benefit both the council and our residents,” he said. ENDS
