Parliament has been informed that the Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education will conclude outstanding refunds for self-sponsored teachers by  August 30 2026.

Answering a parliamentary question on Tuesday, Assistant Minister for child welfare  and basic education ministry, Mr Justin Hunyepa said 17 of the 21 remaining teachers were currently being paid in stages as they complete their modules. The final four will receive their payments by the end of this month.

Mr Hunyepa said the reimbursements were guided by General Order 259, which allowed government to support teachers pursuing self-development through private study. Support may include financial assistance, 10 working days of study leave, or a combination of both, depending on eligibility and available funds.

“From 2017 to date, a total of 213 teachers have been authorised to pursue self-study.  Of these, 192 have already been reimbursed. Further payments will be processed once the respective teachers submit the required documentation,” he said. The Assistant Minister added that the total value of the 17 outstanding refunds was estimated at P490,337.00.

He was responding to a question from Kanye East MP, Mr Prince Mosanana, who sought clarity on the ministry’s position regarding refunds for teachers who undertook private academic development at their own cost. ENDS
