A group of former police officers has formed the Botswana Retired Police Officers Association to help veterans navigate life after service and create sustainable welfare solutions.   

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, the association’s newly elected president, retired Director of the Crime and Intelligence Unit Mr Nunu Lesetedi, said the transition from active duty to civilian life was often difficult for officers who spent years in a disciplined, structured environment.  

“Some retired police officers often feel left behind due to the sudden loss of a structured identity.

We want to express gratitude to those who have served selflessly, ensuring that no veteran feels left behind after retirement.”  

Mr Lesetedi, well known during his service for his drug-detecting dog ‘Boots,’ explained that the association was first established in 2016 under the leadership of former Police Commissioner Mr Norman Moleboge.

Its mandate is to provide healthcare assistance, legal support and financial literacy programs for retired members of the Botswana Police Service (BPS).  

“The initiative aims to provide veterans with a peaceful transition where they can enjoy their post-service years while remaining connected to fellow law enforcement families. Its core purpose is to protect the socioeconomic and general well-being of retired BPS members.”  

Beyond welfare, the association also plans community engagement. Members intend to partner with village neighbourhood watch committees to help combat crime and will run campaigns in schools and villages against alcohol and substance abuse.  

Mr Lesetedi noted that many officers leave service without adequate preparation and might struggle with unresolved issues from their years on duty while facing new challenges in retirement.  

The new executive committee was elected during the association’s Annual General Meeting in Palapye.
Retired Clifford Sejoe will serve as deputy president. Mr Christopher Mbulawa is Secretary General, deputised by Obatsi Rankwalo, and Kelebeng Motlhanka is Treasurer. ENDS
