The high probability of prolonged periods of above-normal temperatures due to the impending El Niño during the coming summer season presents a public health concern. 

Briefing Parliament on Wednesday, the Minister of Health, Dr Stephen Modise cautioned that extreme heat posed a public health risk, leading to illnesses, increased hospital admissions and potential fatalities.

He therefore, emphasised the need for preparedness, and urged all to take practical steps to reduce exposure to the anticipated extreme heat.

The Minister said the anticipated hot and dry conditions heightened the likelihood of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly, pregnant women and those with chronic health issues.  Also, he said extreme heat could adversely affect food safety, water quality and mental health, placing additional stress on communities and households.

“Extreme heat must be taken seriously.

The earlier we act, the greater our ability to prevent illness and save lives.

The Ministry of Health is not waiting for the heat to arrive before we act.

That is why we decided to issue this advisory at this early hour,” Dr Modise said. 

He emphasised prevention as a key public intervention during anticipated extreme heat and urged citizens to stay hydrated by drinking water regularly. 

The Minister also urged and encouraged employers to protect outdoor workers by providing water, shade, and adjusted work hours. ENDS
