Hard hitting boxer George Molwantwa has been crowned the new junior featherweight division national champion.

The stocky pugilist reclaimed top status in his rank Saturday night after a highly charged and gruelling battle with his bitter rival Tshephang Gomotho at the Boipuso Multipurpose Hall.

In what many considered a rematch of the 2025 interclub tournament 54kg match, all the three judges on the night waved to Molwantwa’s favour in every round of the 8 round headliner.

Perfect timing, grit and determination set the tempo for the visiting Molwantwa who was fighting from the corner of Master Fitness Centre on the night.

The equally impressive Gomotho from Bond boxing promotions found no answers to slow the pace or mount any meaningful counterattack.

In the middle rounds Rambo as Gomotho is fondly called threw a couple of clear combinations but his opponent remained in resolute command.

Buoyed by a sold out home crowd Gomotho chased Molwantwa around the ring in the opening rounds curbing any pressure the visiting boxer planned to execute.

Molwantwa quickly changed tempo of the game using his strength and quicker hands to control action from a distance landing clean punches in attack.

He pressed continuously turning portions of the exciting match into a real physical battle.

Towards the closing bell Gomotho was seemingly running out of steam and nearly went down on one knee after missing a left hook and lost balance.

Molwantwa came charging and used speed and impressive footwork to take command and complete a remarkably close contest.

In other exciting supporting bouts Onkarabile Mothibedi won by judges’ split decision in the junior lightweight division against Aobakwe Ditodi in what was undoubtedly the best bout of the supporting acts. 

The two exciting boxers gave out a heart-warming performance much to the delight of the crowd who packed the ring to the rafters.

In the light heavyweight division Reward Ndlovu relied on his size and body attacks to break down Monty Chiepe before the scheduled four round fight was halted by the referee in the second round as the latter was outclassed.

In the bantamweight class Kagiso Letsholo made a combination of hard shots to punish the hapless Kealeboga Alton through a technical knockout.

In the junior welterweight class Nonofo Molatlhegi could not find enough composure against the highly charged Karabo Motshwarakgole who also emerged victorious after a technical knockout. ends
