Makgadikgadi midnight walk returns under full moon

The annual Makgadikgadi Midnight Walk returns from September 25 to 28, offering participants a unique moonlit adventure across the iconic Makgadikgadi Pans while raising funds for charity.
Event organiser Sarona Moabi says the event is deliberately scheduled during the full moon to enhance the walking experience.
He says the walk began as a dare between two friends before evolving into an annual fundraising initiative that combines adventure with showcasing Botswana's natural beauty.
Although the event has traversed different terrains over the years, Moabi says the organisers settled on the Makgadikgadi Pans because of their ever-changing landscape.
"No two walks on the pans are ever the same. It is a beautiful way to experience the pans on foot under the moonlight," he says.
The event, he says also promotes tourism by taking participants to remote sections of the pans that are inaccessible by vehicle, with experienced guides sharing insights into the area's wildlife, culture and heritage.
Beyond tourism, he says the initiative supports surrounding communities through charitable projects and encourages them to apply for funding through the trust.
Moabi says participant safety remains a top priority, adding that strict environmental guidelines, medical support and emergency response teams will be in place throughout the event.
He urges participants to prepare by walking longer distances beforehand, adding that the ultimate purpose of the gruelling challenge is to raise funds for charity. ENDS
