Mogoditshane is one of the largest and fastest-growing villages in the country, with a 2026-projected population of 98,889.

Answering a question in Parliament on Tuesday, the Minister for State President, Defence and Security, Mr Moeti Mohwasa said the Botswana Police Service has deployed a total of 265 police personnel to police the area.

He said based on the projected population of 98 889 and the current deployment of 265 police personnel, the police-to-population ratio in the Mogoditshane policing area stands at one police officer to 373 people.

Mr Mohwasa explained that the current ratio places considerable operational pressure on the officers serving in the area, particularly given the rapid population growth, urban developments and increasing socio-economic activities within Mogoditshane.

Minister Mohwasa further stated that Mogoditshane police station also covered Metsimotlhabe, Mmopane and Ledumadumane. He said it was the ministry’s desire to increase police manpower in the country, including at Mogoditshane.

However, he said due to budgetary constraints, there were no plans to substantially increase police personnel in Mogoditshane. Nevertheless, Mr Mohwasa said the government was constructing police stations at Ledumadumane and Mmopane, which would alleviate the current pressure from Mogoditshane police station.

He said the stations were to be completed by end of August this year and it was expected that upon completion, police officers would be deployed to these new facilities.Mr Mohwasa was responding to a question from the MP for Mogoditshane East, Mr Letlhogonolo Barongwang, who had asked the minister the current number of Botswana Police Service officers deployed to Mogoditshane and the ratio of police officers to the resident population.

Mr Barongwang had also wanted to know if there were plans to increase police presence in Mogoditshane, given the rising incidents of crime and public safety concerns in the area, particularly in light of the opening of the new police station, so as to strengthen law enforcement capacity and improve safety.
