President Boko touts health benefits of ostrich meat
14 Jul 2026
President Advocate Duma Boko has encouraged Batswana to embrace ostrich meat, describing it as a healthy alternative because it is low in cholesterol and rich in nutritional value.
Speaking during a tour of the Dibete Ostrich Multiplication Plant, President Boko said greater public awareness of the health benefits of ostrich meat would help create demand and expand the local market for ostrich farmers.
He urged farmers and entrepreneurs to invest in ostrich production and related businesses, including the cultivation of sunflower and other feed crops to support the industry’s growth.
President Boko also called for the productive use of the 561-hectare Dibete farm, saying it had the potential to generate employment, boost incomes and contribute to Botswana’s economic diversification.
President Advocate Duma Boko urged Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA) and Land Boards to make it easier for Batswana to venture into commercial ostrich farming by providing access to finance and land.
He said government would continue investing in the facility and its infrastructure to strengthen the ostrich industry and create more opportunities for local farmers, urging Batswana to move away from subsistence farming and embrace commercial agriculture.
He said the country had enough land to produce more food locally and reduce dependence on imports such as sorghum and maize.
The President said farmers with adequate land should use it productively, noting that commercial ostrich farming could boost household incomes while contributing to economic growth and job creation. ENDS
