African tennis powerhouses have started to descend upon Gaborone ahead of the highly anticipated Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III tournament, which serves off this coming Monday at the National Tennis Centre.
Ten countries, Algeria, Burundi, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Namibia, Madagascar, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe will join Botswana for the week-long showcase.
Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee Nonofo Othusitse said preparations went well to deliver a highly successful event.
He urged local sponsors and supporters to rally behind the tournament, adding that a memorable delivery would strengthen Botswana’s standing with World Tennis to secure future hosting rights. The continental spectacle has drawn significant backing from corporate and trade bodies looking to leverage sport for national visibility.
Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) Brand Manager Thuso Palai said sport remained one of the premier avenues for placing Botswana on the global map.
He said the strategic value prompted the BITC to partner with the Botswana Tennis Association (BTA), ensuring a world-class environment for both international athletes and visiting delegates.
Team Botswana representative, Chelsea Chakanyuka said players were fully aware of the high expectations placed upon them in the historic stage.
She said competing in front of a home crowd served as a motivating factor for the squad.
Botswana’s team include Chelsea, Angel Chakanyuka, Kelebogile Monnayoo, Leungo Monnayoo, Rethabile Moshaoa and Ekua Youri.
Meanwhile, the stakes are high for the competing nations given that the tournament format places teams into round-robin pools before cross-pool positional play-offs determine which elite squads earn the coveted promotion.
Only the top-performing squads at the conclusion of the showcase, will earn a coveted promotion to the Africa Group II tier for the upcoming season. ENDS
