Serowe gears up for Sir Seretse Khama Day

29 Jun 2026

From the melodious sounds of song to the power of the spoken word, the Sir Seretse Khama Day celebration in Serowe is being meticulously crafted as a living time capsule—a day designed not just to remember history, but to relive it.

According to the Royal Uncle, Kgosi Seretse Kebailele, the celebration would be hosted at the gaMmangwato Kgotla on July 1, under the resonant theme: Democracy, Unity, Peace and Harmony: Ideals for All Batswana.”

“This year, we are doing things differently. We are not merely celebrating; we are adopting the legacy Sir Seretse Khama left us. He gave us a nugget of wisdom: ‘A nation without a culture is a nation without a soul.’ As the people of Serowe, we intend to revive our rich culture and pass the torch to the next generation, so they may know and be proud of who they are,” he narrated to BOPA in an interview.

True to this vision, every element of the day, right from the food to the festivities will be indigenous. Attendees can expect traditional song and dance, poetry, games and eulogies that echo the heartbeat of Sengwato culture and decorum.

The event will start at 08:00 am and will, among others, be graced by the royal family, and former cabinet Minister Mr Charles Tibone will be the guest of honour. Government top brass and the Serowe community will also be part of the day-long commemorations.

The ever-uplifting KTM Choir and other traditional choirs will entertain the crowd. Event committee spokesperson,  Pastor Gaolathe Bosekeng, noted that the theme spoke to both aspiration and action.

“We are working with the Ministers’ Fraternal, which promotes peace, love, and tolerance at all times. They have been allocated the morning session to open the day with sermons and prayer,” said Bosekeng, who commended the inclusive nature of the commemoration for bringing Bangwato from different walks of life together in one accord to honour the late Sir Seretse Khama.

Furthermore, he highlighted that visual arts would feature for the first time this year

“We shall host both painting and drawing categories where artists will be challenged to create a portrait of Sir Seretse Khama. The winning artist will receive a prize to be announced on the day,” Pastor Bosekeng stated.

In the spirit of self-reliance and independence, the event’s catering will be entirely community-driven.ENDS
