St George University Brings Graduation to Gaborone
25 Jun 2026
More than 130 Batswana physicians will take center stage on June 27 when St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine brings a special Commencement Ceremony directly to Gaborone.
The event recognizes a vital cohort of SGU-trained doctors, many of whom now anchor Botswana’s healthcare system in critical roles across both the Ministry of Health and private clinical practice. By hosting the graduation locally, the Grenada, West Indies-based university aims to honor its growing African physician network, allowing graduates and their families to celebrate the milestone on home soil.
Botswana’s Minister of Health, Dr. Stephen Modise, is slated to deliver the keynote address. His own path from medical student to one of the nation's top healthcare leaders serves as a powerful blueprint for the impact SGU graduates are making across the region.
"As we celebrate 50 years of St. George’s University, we are proud to recognize the achievements of our graduates from Botswana and across Africa," said Dr. Marios Loukas, President and Dean of the SGU School of Medicine.
The Gaborone ceremony is a major highlight of SGU’s year-long 50th anniversary calendar. It carries deep personal significance for many local alumni who were previously unable to travel to the university's traditional graduation ceremonies in New York.
Reflecting the importance of the occasion, a delegation of senior SGU leadership will be in attendance. The visiting officials include Dr. Gaurov Dayal, CEO of Medforth Global Healthcare Education; Dr. Mark Clunes, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs; Dr. Maira Du Plessis, Assistant Dean of Faculty Affairs; and Dr. Lindonne Telesford, Associate Dean of the School of Graduate Studies.
