Morupule Coal Mine’s cycling club has donated P40 000 to Khama III Memorial Museum in Serowe.
Speaking at the official handover on Februaryb24, the mine’s human resources manager, Tom Mongale said they found it appropriate to give back to the communities in which they were based.
He said the mine did not only intend to take the mineral deposits from the community but their intention was also to give back. Morupule Coal Mine cycling club, Mongale said they had for the past four years donated over P250 000 to various charity organisations.
“As Morupule Coal Mine we realised that we should take care of our past in order to build the future,” he said. He said most of the time museums were neglected thus reminding those in attendance that they must remember their history.
Mogale highlighted the importance of preserving the future and quoted that the late president Sir Seretse Khama once said “a nation without a past is a lost nation and a person without a past is a people without a soul.”
The chairman of the museum and also Central District council chairman, Lesego Raditanka commended MCM cycling club for their gesture.
Raditanka said it was not the company’s first donation to the mine saying their generosity started last year when they donated P80 000 to the museum. He said the museum did not have a way of generating funds but relied on donations to stay afloat.
He said the exhibitions that took place at the museum were educational. Furthermore, he pointed out that the museum used to get a grant from the council which had since been stopped. Thus, he urged other organisations and well-wishers to emulate Morupule Coal Mine cycling club’s efforts. ENDS
