Botswana Joins World in commemorating World Telecommunication Day
23 May 2026
Botswana joined the global community today to commemorate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day under the 2026 theme : Digital Lifeline: Strengthening Resilience in a Connected World.”
Officiating at the national commemoration held in Natale in Shashe West constituency, Minister of Communications and Innovation David Tshere said reliable, secure network connectivity was essential for people to experience global events in real time without delay.
Minister Tshere explained that the theme’s focus on 'strengthening resilience' refers to the ability of countries, communities and systems to prepare for, respond to and recover from disruptions whenever they arise.
“A resilient digital ecosystem should remain reliable and operational during emergencies. Connectivity must be inclusive, covering both the elite and less privileged members of society across all geographical areas, he said.
He noted that in a connected world, risks and disruptions could spread quickly, but solutions could too. Building robust digital infrastructure is therefore critical.
Minister Tshere highlighted Botswana’s progress, pointing to the Delta Digital Data Centre in Gaborone, officially unveiled last year, as part of efforts to bolster the country’s digital backbone.
The annual World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, observed on 17 May, promotes awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies can bring to societies and economies. ENDS
