25 Feb 2014
Government has spent P4 641 457.38 in implementing 167 poverty eradication projects in Kanye.
This was revealed by the chairman of the Kanye Administrative Authority (KAA) Mr Patrick Ralotsia, who added that 123 of the projects are still operational. He was officially opening a sub-district council meeting on Monday, February 24 in Kanye.
He added that the funded projects included sewing, tent hire, bakery, kiosks, home laundry, food catering, salon, leather works, poultry and small stock. He also revealed that the sub-district will soon embark on a poverty service week in Molapowabojang, Letlhakane East and Gasegwagwa village to fast track uptake of the program in the area.
On Ipelegeng, Mr Ralotsia said project implementation analysis indicates that 99percent of the projects will be completed by the end of March 2014, and predicted a spillover of some projects. Mr Ralotsia also revealed that the sub-district received applications under the LIMID program from October 2013 to December 2013.
“There were 42 small stock, four tswana chicken and two fodder processing projects. The beneficiaries received their packages which included goats and drugs,” he said. He added that the presidential housing appeal project is progressing smoothly as all the destitute houses in Kanye are complete and have been handed over to beneficiaries.
He revealed that the KAA has been allocated P300, 000 to construct three destitute houses in 2014. He said two houses will be built in Lorolwane and one in Gasita and appealed to responsible officers to closely supervise the projects so that they could be completed on time and handed to the needy families.
Councilors were told that following recent heavy rains in the southern district, a lot of roads have been washed out and left unusable. Mr Ralotisa said the roads section is doing the best they can to maintain the roads especially in the worst affected areas. “Kanye’s terrain has steep slopes and we are always going to find it difficult sustain gravel maintenance works since the gravel is always washed away during heavy rains. It is therefore very crucial that we design a major drainage master plan,” he said. ENDS
