Khoemacau Injects P1.4m in School Refurbishment

21 May 2026

MMG Khoemacau Copper Mining Company has injected over P1.4 million into the refurbishment of Kubung Primary School, a move expected to significantly improve the learning environment for learners and teachers at the school.

The refurbishment project, officially handed over on Tuesday, involved major renovations across the school infrastructure, including replacement of ceilings in all 11 classroom blocks, installation of air conditioners, refurbishment of damaged floors, doors, toilets and windows as well as repainting of school buildings, electrical works and kitchen maintenance.

The company also rehabilitated the school’s perimeter screen wall and repaired the main gate which had become unusable due to damage and wear over the years.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Khoemacau director of operations, Mr Xia Weiquan, said the mining company remained committed to investing in sustainable community development initiatives that improve people’s livelihoods beyond mining activities and pledged a continue support towards the school.

He said the refurbishment project reflects the company’s belief that education plays a central role in transforming communities and securing a better future for children.

Mr Weiquan further applauded the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Botswana and China, saying the successful completion of the project demonstrated the value of international partnerships in community development.

“The project would not have been possible without the friendship between Botswana and China,” he said. However, in a recorded keynote address, the Chinese Ambassador to Botswana, Mr Fan Yong, commended Chinese companies operating in Botswana for continuously supporting community development initiatives.

He said such efforts strengthened relations between the two countries while contributing meaningfully towards improving lives within local communities.

North West District Council chairperson, Mr Itumeleng Kelebetseng, applauded Khoemacau mine for supporting the education sector at a time when government resources remain strained.

He urged learners to use the improved infrastructure as a motivation to work hard and excel in their studies.

Kubung Primary School head, Ms Grace Molapisi, appreciated the project saying it came at a critical time as the school had continued to perform well academically despite operating under difficult conditions.

“The school has been doing really well as we attained a 93.9 per cent pass rate in 2025 despite overcrowded classrooms and limited resources,” she added.

Ms Molapisi encouraged learners to take responsibility to protect the refurbished facilities and maintaining cleanliness around the school premises. She further appealed to parents, teachers and school staff to continue working together to improve academic performance and strive toward a 100 per cent pass rate. BOPA
