Khama urges nation to keep Mogae values alive

Batswana have been urged to carry forward the values embodied by former President Dr Festus Gontebanye Mogae, including humility, integrity, respect and selfless service.

Delivering a tribute during the burial service in Gaborone on Saturday, his predecessor, former President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama, reflected on his long working relationship with the late statesman, describing him as a leader of quiet strength, wisdom and exceptional intellect.

According to Lt Gen. Khama, Dr Mogae believed in dialogue and compromise rather than confrontation and division.

“He understood that leadership is not about dominance, but about bringing people together. Where others might have chosen division, he chose unity,” he said.

Dr Mogae served as Botswana’s president from 1998 to 2008, a decade Lt Gen. Khama described as transformative for the country’s development and modernisation. During that period, Botswana intensified its fight against HIV and AIDS, becoming internationally recognised for its bold and honest response to the epidemic.

“At a time when many nations hesitated, Botswana stood firm. His efforts not only saved lives, but also restored hope and dignity to countless families across our nation,” Lt Gen. Khama said.

The former President also highlighted several infrastructure developments undertaken during Dr Mogae’s administration, including major water projects such as the North-South Carrier pipeline, Letsibogo Dam, Ntimbale Dam and Dikgatlhong Dam.

Lt Gen. Khama said the projects strengthened Botswana’s long-term water security and would continue benefiting future generations for decades to come.

He further praised Dr Mogae’s role in expanding road networks, airports, telecommunications and electrification projects across the country. Airports in Maun, Kasane and Francistown were upgraded to international standards during his tenure, while rural electrification reached more than 130 villages.

Lt Gen. Khama also recalled the launch of Botswana Television in 2000 and the establishment of Botswana International University of Science and Technology, which Dr Mogae later served as Chancellor.

“These achievements were part of a broader vision to modernise the country and create opportunities for future generations,” he said.

Lt Gen Khama also paid tribute to members of Dr Mogae’s Cabinet and economic team, crediting them for helping drive Botswana’s prudent financial management and national development agenda.

He said Dr Mogae left Botswana’s economy and government finances in a strong position, which later helped the country navigate the global economic downturn of 2008. Lt Gen Khama further praised Dr Mogae’s commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law, recalling his decision to declare a state of emergency in order to reconvene Parliament and ensure eligible citizens were not excluded from the voters’ roll.

“Someone had made a mistake which he corrected. After all, we all make mistakes,” Lt Gen Khama said. ends
