Tourism operators capitalise on flooding
18 May 2026
Flood during peak-seasons often threaten and affect tourist accommodation, while in certain locations can transform landscapes into unique attractions allowing operators to offer niche eco-tourism and those not affected benefit with increased tourist demand and new opportunities. While increased water levels in the Okavango Delta continue to make access difficult and hazardous for tourists, some operators are looking at capitalising on the situation and turning it into a worthwhile experience. Access to key areas is only permitted when deemed safe, causing logistical nightmares for operators. Some operators ended up calling for urgent and targeted intervention to prevent future closures while some tried other alternatives to ensure their clients reach their destinations. Wilderness Safari company, which operates campsites in the delta and Linyanti concession ensured business continuity despite persistent flood. Majority of its camps with raised structures and located in an upper land remained functional with access via specific routes despite the closure of the Moremi Game Reserve road. ENDS
