Tsodilo Resources Company has discovered high grade mineral deposits containing 15 rare earth elements along with other critical minerals such as copper, cobalt, nickel, vanadium and silver at Gxwihaba Metals Project near Shakawe.
The company has partnered with the University of Cape Town, alongside Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI) and the Botswana Geoscience Institute to advance the potential expansion of the discovered minerals.
The company's geologist, Ms Mary Toteng confirmed that the rare earth elements along with five critical minerals being copper, cobalt, nickel, vanadium and silver were located between 20-50 metres below the earth's surface.
She said they had patterned with some research institutions to strengthen their understanding of the deposits and establish their viability and economic beneficiation.
"Through our collaborative partnership, we want to investigate more on the minerals to determine if they could be explored, mine profitably while managing environmental risk as well as to find out the best beneficiation model to process them efficiently."
The discovery of the minerals came at a time when demand has surged as countries accelerate energy transition and industrial modernisation efforts.
The project coordinator, Mr Kobamelo Baikgodisi acknowledged that the minerals represented a transformative opportunity for Botswana economic diversification. ENDS
