LeFesto Newsboy Cap Look

12 May 2026

While many will remember former president Dr Festus Mogae for his economic reforms and his legacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS, others will forever cherish memories of his stylish off-duty fashion sense.

Away from the image of a statesman in suits, LeFesto, as Batswana affectionately called him, became known for his relaxed denim-on-denim outfits paired with stylish newsboy caps, commonly referred to in street lingo as “stapora caps.”

The distinctive look made him stand out and inspired many, particularly young people.

Whether dressed casually in chinos and a checked blazer or fully embracing the denim look, the former president carried the newsboy cap with effortless elegance, evoking a classic British-inspired style.

“I first fell in love with the newsboy cap look when I was on duty and I was impressed with how the former  president had put together this fashionable look which just made him stand out,” said DailyNews photographer Phenyo Moalosi, who has since become devoted to the style.

Moalosi also said Rre Mogae’s denim-on-denim look, especially with the newsboy cap, influenced him to try out the style.

I must say I truly loved the way the old man carried himself. He exuded charisma and style and absolutely pulled it off, he said. ENDS
