Will Botswana 4x400M Relay Kings Strike Gold Again
01 May 2026
In just 24 hours, the National Stadium will tremble as the Debswana World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26 kickoff on home soil.
The question on every Motswana’s lips is; Are you ready to see our 4x400m kings strike again?
Since first stepping onto the World Relays stage, Botswana’s men’s 4x400m squad has built an enviable ‘finals only’ reputation. They do not just show up. They dominate.
Their rise has been relentless. An 8th-place finish in 2015 gave way to stunning silver medal in 2017. In 2024, the team shocked the world in the Bahamas, clocking a blistering 2:59.11 to bring home gold. Last year, the team also won gold during the Tokyo World Athletics Championships in 2:57.76.
This time, the race is a homecoming. From the legendary Isaac Makwala to the explosive speed of Letsile Tebogo and the relentless grit of Leungo Scotch, these men have carried Botswana’s flag across every continent. Now, it is the nation’s turn to carry them.
“There is nothing like the roar of a home crowd when the baton is handed over for the final leg,” said one athletics official.
Fans have the chance to witness world-leading times in person and experience the sheer velocity that has made Botswana a household name in athletics.
The stakes in the heats are high. Botswana’s men’s 4x400m team lines up in Heat One against Denmark, Nigeria, Australia, Poland, Brazil, the Netherlands and Jamaica. ENDS
