Will GU seal FNB Premiership championship
23 Apr 2026
Log leaders and FNB Premiership defending champions, Gaborone United are expected to seal the deal, as they face TAFIC FC at the Francistown City Council Stadium, in a title deciding match.
Currently, only three points is required for GU to defend its title.
With only three games left to conclude the league season, the Money Machine has accumulated 65 points and three points against Matjimenyenga will seal the deal.
GU will go into the April 25 match against TAFIC, boosted by a seven-match winning streak, with five consecutive clean sheets away from home.
On the other hand, the stakes are high for TAFIC, as the Ghetto outfit is fighting tooth and nail to survive relegation.
Placed on the 12th position with 25 points, TAFIC is determined to win all its remaining games.
GU public relations officer, Tshepo Molwane acknowledged that the encounter would be tough, as TAFIC would be at home.
“It will never get easy playing TAFIC at home. It is not easy to beat them at that stadium,” he said.
However, Molwane said they were coming with one mission: to secure a victory and successfully defend their championship.
“We know what is at stake and we are preparing well for the encounter. Our players knows what winning the league means and even the new players are hoping to go there play and win,”he said.
Molwane also highlighted that the other motivation was that they wanted to defend the title and participate again in the CAF Champions League.
“We have unfinished business in the CAF Champions League. We want to play again and our ultimate goal is to reach the group stages,” he said
TAFIC public relations officer, Mbaki Kula said preparations were on the right track.
“The boys are ready and determined to get a positive result. Losing against Jwaneng Young Stars in the Orange FA Cup, a team from first division gave us motivation as it shows that with determination we can also pull a surprise,” he said.
Kula said TAFIC would treat all the remaining games like a cup final, where the ultimate result was a win, so that they could retain their place in the premier league.
However, Kula acknowledged that the boys were affected by the two consecutive losses, one in Orange FA Cup and the other in the league.
Despite the past setback, he said the team was raring to go and focused on getting positive results.
Kula said TAFIC was at a point where it needed the courage from its supporters more than ever before.
“We are appealing to our supporters to come in large numbers and encourage the boys,”he said.
