Govt Engages 70 Casual Labourers To Boost FMD Fight

23 Apr 2026

The government has employed 70 casual labourers to repair drift fences in villages designated as surveillance areas to curb the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

Dr Kingsley Siele, veterinarian, said villages within a 10km radius of infected zones, including Lejwana, Gathwane, GaMajaalela, Gatuma, Mogwalale and Magoriapitse had been placed under surveillance.

As such, he said damaged drift fences in these areas were being reinforced and fitted with gates to prevent movement of livestock between infected, vaccinated and surveillance zones.

He said the work was expected to be completed within a week, after which the gates would be manned to stop illegal movement of cattle and banned by-products. ENDS
