Shashemooke Motofest Sparks Hope For Growth

07 Apr 2026

Despite the low turnout, the inaugural Shashemooke Motofest Championship was a thrilling event, showcasing skills and bravery.

Eighteen-year-old Elang Chibana, a Form 4 learner at Mogoditshane Senior Secondary School, stole the show as the only female rider among the four competitors.

Riding her bike nicknamed ‘101’, Chibana zoomed through the 96km terrain, navigating rocks, uphill and sandy terrain with ease.

“It was a great experience, and I am glad I could finish the race. I want to encourage more girls to participate in motor sports, it is a sport for both males and females,” Chibana said.

She took home P1 000 and vowed to work harder to increase her presence in the sport.

Kosmas Mamaloukos dominated the male category, showcasing his skill and confidence on his motorbike. He also received P1 000 in cash while Ndiye Chakalisa suffered an injury.

A motor sport enthusiast, Tumza Modise, praised the organisers for bringing the event to the northern side of the country.

“Events like this are usually associated with areas like Khawa, but it is commendable that they are starting to consider areas in the north,” he said.

Gomolemo Chibana, Elang’s father and vice president of Botswana Motor Sport, called for support from government noting that the event had the potential to create employment.

With more support and sponsorship, the Shashemooke Motofest could become a major attraction in Botswana’s motor sport calendar.

The event concluded with a mouthwatering performance by local artiste Magdeline ‘Charma Gal’ Lesolebe. ENDS
