The Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) has elected Elijah Jones as their new president.

Jones was elected after the union’s an annual general meeting held in Mahalapye over the weekend (February 22-23). In his acceptance speech, Jones who was taking over from Bob Lekan said he was humbled and honored to be elected a new president of BRU.

He told the delegates that he was looking forward to working with the BRU family to take rugby to the next level, urging everybody to make sure that rugby becomes interesting to the general public.“We must work together to make sure that rugby becomes an exciting sport and a high light in the sporting fraternity,” he said.

For his part the newly elected vice-president Thusego Segaise who was taking over from Mpho Masisi said he is proud to be part of BRU because over the years the union has exercised good governance, accountability and transparency. Meanwhile Vincent Mashaba retained his treasury post as he was unopposed. Jerome Alabu took the baton from Kadimo Modisa and Lesedi Keekae and Mathews Porogi as additional members.

The former president Bob Lekan urged all affiliates to support the new executive committee to enable them to do their work effectively for the benefit of the sport. He said that no one wants to be associated with failure and as such it is paramount that they give their all and in that way sponsors will not hesitate to come on board.

On other issues some clubs decried the high joining fees and pleaded that they be revised because it is hard for them to raise funds.

The affiliates also said that new clubs need to be given support until they can be able to run their affairs smoothly.

Others said that the new executive must ensure that for those clubs who have different pools they play on the same venue to cut costs on transport.

The new executive committee will be in office for the next two years. ENDS
