Multitudes bid former Speaker farewell

19 Mar 2026

The nation on Wednesday stood still in solemn reflection as family, friends and leaders of the political divide and the general public paid their last respects to former Speaker of the National Assembly and diplomat, Gladys Kokorwe.

Kokorwe, was a trailblazing leader whose life was defined by service, dignity and an unyielding commitment to justice.

She was laid to rest at Phomolong Cemetery in Gaborone, following a dignified funeral procession from her residence at Tapologo Farm, in Ramphate.

Tributes delivered during the service painted the portrait of a woman whose influence spanned public service, politics and diplomacy.

Her uncle, Mr Obolokile Molale, described her as a leader who served with “unwavering dedication,” noting that as a politician she uplifted her community and as an ambassador she represented Botswana with grace and integrity.

Drawing from scripture, he said Kokorwe’s life embodied righteousness and justice. “Her legacy is a testament to her unshakable commitment to justice, compassion and service,” he said, adding that her leadership will remain a guiding light for generations.

On behalf of her parents, Mr Richard Nkae said Kokorwe’s illustrious career brought pride and honour to the family, noting that her achievements have etched their name into the country’s history.

Her sibling, Mr Tuelo Botlhoko, offered a deeply personal reflection, recalling her natural leadership qualities from a young age.

“She was decisive even as a child, always taking the lead among us. “Our father always said one day she will be a leader and indeed she became one,” he said.

He revealed that the family had been preparing to celebrate her 80th birthday in November, a milestone now marked with bittersweet remembrance.

Her grandchild, Mr Billy Junior Kokorwe, delivered an emotional tribute, reflecting on the woman behind the public figure.

“To the world, she was a minister, an Ambassador and a powerful Speaker. To us, she was simply our grandmother,” he said. “She taught us that hard work and perseverance define greatness, and she encouraged us to follow our own paths without fear or limitation.”

Close friend, Ms Damara Tsiane remembered her as loyal, generous and family-oriented, while former minister and ambassador, Mr Jacob Nkate, described her as disciplined, principled and steadfast.

“In the often turbulent world of politics, she was a calming force. She believed in doing things the right way and remained grounded throughout her career.”

The Botswana Democratic Party leader, Mr Mpho Balopi described her as a dedicated cadre who rose through the ranks of the party with distinction.

Mr Balopi noted that she entered Parliament in 1994 as Member of Parliament for Kweneng South, succeeding the late Peter Mmusi and went on to serve three consecutive terms.

Messages of condolence from former presidents, including Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama and Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi were read during the service alongside tributes from Speaker of the National Assembly and Chairperson of Ntlo ya Dikgosi, Kgosi Malope II reflecting the breadth of her national impact.
