Volunteer programme engages 6 033
23 Feb 2014
An average of 6 033 people were engaged on monthly basis in the Police Volunteer Programme over the past ten months.
Minister of Defence Justice and Security, Mr Ramadeluka Seretse told Parliament on Thursday, February 20 that Botswana Police Services availed 6 500 slots country-wide for the programme in the financial year 2013/14. He dismissed allegations to the effect that the programme had been phased out. Responding to a question in Parliament, Mr Seretse said, “We have observed that the uptake of volunteer programme in urban areas is very low.
We have therefore increased the number of Special Constables in affected areas to augment crime fighting efforts by the Police Service.” Gaborone West South MP, Mr Botsalo Ntuane had asked the minister to explain whether the programme had been phased out, and if so, measures put in place to complement and enhance police efforts in fighting crime.
