Advocacy Groups Vital For Consumer Protection
17 Mar 2026
A consumer advocacy group can be a powerful tool for promoting fair business practices and protecting consumer welfare.
Competition & Consumer Authority (CCA) CEO, Mr Gideon Nkala, stated during a stakeholder workshop and encouraged community members to establish consumer advocacy groups.
Since CCA staff are limited and cannot adequately reach all customers on the ground, Mr Nkala said communities should form consumer advocacy groups to help fill this gap.
He added that consumer advocacy groups were well-positioned to guard against unfair and deceptive practices due to their close proximity to local businesses.
Through workshops, the CCA aims to raise awareness and empower communities.
Another official from CAA, Mr Lawrence Mothibi, discussed the obligations of businesses and consumers, noting that the Consumer Protection Act outlined all consumer rights and responsibilities.
He emphasised that product information, including prices, should be displayed clearly in Pula currency and be visible on every item and safety labels must also be clear.
Mr Mothibi said if a product had been used, it should be clearly marked as such.
He warned consumers to be cautious about entering contracts that might disadvantage them, such as high-purchase agreements.
Mr Mothibi stressed that consumers had the right to receive quality goods and services, also highlighted the importance of consumer education so that people understood their rights and obligations, as well as those of businesses.
He encouraged consumers to first raise any complaints directly with the business before escalating the matter to the CCA.
Mr Ernest Bagopi from CCA said that any consumer advocacy group established should meet the criteria set by the CCA and be officially registered with the authority. ENDS
