Mental Health Matters

17 Mar 2026

Mumzo ProCare Health Clinic recently organised a one-day intensive workshop in Francistown, aimed at training participants in mental health first response and counseling skills.

Speaking at the workshop, Founder and CEO of Mumzo ProCare, Dr Blinkie Oteng, said they targeted first responders who often facilitated open communication, to make individuals feel heard when they were experiencing distress.

She said they had realised that mental health issues were on the rise in various settings including workplaces, schools, churches, and communities.

Dr Oteng, however said what they had realised was that mental health first responders were not counsellors but played a critical role as the initial support for those facing mental health challenges.

“When individuals are experiencing distress, the first person they approach is often not a professional but someone close to them,” she said.

As such, she said it was important to capacitate first responders on how to provide immediate assistance and guidance to help prevent situations from worsening.

“First responders can encourage individuals to seek professional help by suggesting they visit a counselor, psychologist, or doctor to access the necessary services,” she added.

One of the trainees, Ms Martha Mbete commended the workshop for equipping her with essential skills.

“The workshop has taught me that I should be ready to offer help whenever possible, be kind and listen, and refer individuals top professionals because as a first responder, my role is to ensure people receive the necessary support,” she stated.

Another participant, Mr Theophilous Ntakhwana, mentioned that the workshop clarified the distinction between mental health and mental illness for him. He noted that mental health was multifaceted and each person’s experience was distinct.

Mr Ntakhwana urged young individuals to prioritise their mental well-being and that they should seek help from others when faced with challenges. ENDS
