World Relays Revive School Sport Nostalgia

16 Mar 2026

The World Athletics Relays 50-day countdown event held at MmaMasire Grounds in Gaborone on March 13 sparked memories of school sport, with athletes and spectators alike reminiscing about the good old days.

The event, which featured relay teams from different schools in Gaborone West, brought back memories of when school sport was a vital part of learning and a breeding ground for future international athletes.

Athletes ran barefooted on dusty track, marked with rhino light.

It was during school sport competitions, that coaches would scout for athletes to groom and represent the country on the international stage.

Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo is a testament to the importance of school sport, which was suspended in March 2020 due to disputes over teacher allowances and funding.

However, Minister of Sport and Arts, Jacob Kelebeng, has promised that school sport will resume soon, saying relevant ministries have agreed in principle to restart sports activities in schools.

Meanwhile, preparations for the World Athletics Relays are underway, with the Lefika International Relays and Golden Grand Prix serving as dry runs for the event.

Seven countries have confirmed their participation in the Lefika International Relays, scheduled for March 28 in Francistown.

World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26 Local Organising Committee chairperson, Martin Mokgwathi, promised a memorable event, saying the committee was prepared to host the world. ENDS
