The first ever Builders World Botswana Classic three-day stage race begins this weekend at Masa Centre in Gaborone.
The event is organised by Tsela Riders Cycling Club and will run from February 21-23. The cycling race, which was launched at the Gaborone International Convention Centre on February 10 is expected to attract cyclists from neighbouring countries such as South Africa, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland.
The first stage will be a time trial on Friday where cyclists would compete on a one lap 4km circuit starting at Masa Centre. On Saturday morning (February 22), an 84km road race will begin from Boatle to Mmankgodi, followed by a one hour circuit race at the new CBD in Gaborone in the afternoon.
After that, there will be a 109km road race on the final day, starting and finishing at Grand Palm. On Sunday (February 23) there will be fun rides, including a kiddie’s ride, 20km corporate challenge and beginners’ race, and a 60km race.
The chairman of Tsela Riders Cycling Club, Nathan Kgadi confirmed that the race is on track and everything is in order. He said the police will be present at all intersections to ensure the safety of both the riders and the public.
Registration closed on Thursday and only 120 cyclists are expected to take part in the race. “We are expecting cyclists from other countries, but Zimbabwe and South Africa have been confirmed” he said.
He said on Sunday people should come for the 20km and 60 Km races as well as attending other corporate events. The race is sponsored by Builders World together with their partners, Steel Junction, Trade World and Caltex. ENDS
