Erratic Rainfall And Lack Of Funds Affect Mosisedi Farmers
26 Feb 2026
Mosisedi farmers are said to be struggling this ploughing season due to lack of access to funding and unpredictable rainfall. According to one of the farmers Mr Thebe Phirinyane, inconsistent rainfall pattern delayed the activity as they started ploughing in December 2025. Mr Phirinyane revealed in an interview with BOPA that they had a challenge with procurement of inputs as they awaited payment from Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board to access funding from banks which they also owed. This, he said had contributed to a reduction in the hectares ploughed this season as compared to the previous ploughing season. The targeted ploughing area for each Mosisedi farmer was 500 hectares, but as a result of the circumstances, they ended up ploughing 370 hectares per farmer. “It was not easy to access fertilisers from suppliers, as some had already gone for holidays when we started ploughing,” he said.
