Team Botswana Promises Better Game

11 Feb 2026

Better play is expected from the Botswana Badminton national team on Friday in the individual events of the All Africa Senior Badminton Championships.

This comes after the national teams lost their group stage matches and failed to proceed to the quarterfinals of the championships.

Nigeria won 5-0 against Botswana men’s team while Ghana beat the local lads 3-2. Algeria beat Botswana women’s team 5-0 but lady luck smiled on the local ladies as they beat Lesotho 5-0.

Botswana Badminton Association technical director, who is also Team Botswana manager, Tlholego Chamo, remained hopeful but acknowledged that the tournament was no walk in the park for Team Botswana because they were grouped with tough nations in the likes of Nigeria and Algeria.

Even though the women’s team won against Lesotho, Chamo said that was not enough for them to make it to the next leg. Only the top two in the group will make it to the quarterfinals and in that group, Algeria and Mauritius would play in the quarterfinals.

Chamo was pleased that Botswana put up a good fight despite not proceeding to the next round.

“I am saying this because our performance in the championships we competed in, in the past was not good,” he said.

Chamo hailed the training the team had in India prior to the tournament, and expressed their determination to go far.

“With good preparations and constant training, I am confident of positive results. We just need to be patient and work very hard,” he said. BOPA
