Intersection does not warrant traffic lights - study
10 Feb 2013
The Ministry of Transport and Communications carried out traffic analysis concerning the heavy traffic at the Mmamashia/Oodi intersection during the design and construction of the Airport Roundabout/Rasesa Road, Minister Nonofo Molefhi has said.
He said the analysis included the feasibility of installing traffic lights at the junction and the study recommended that the volume of side road traffic to and from Oodi did not warrant the installation of traffic lights at that point in time.
Mr Molefhi said his ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development was procuring a consultancy for the improvement of traffic signals within greater Gaborone. He said it was expected that subsequent to the consultancy, improvements will be made to all major junctions, including the junction in question.
The MP for Kgatleng East, Mr Isaac Mabiletsa had asked the minister whether he was aware of heavy traffic at the Mmamashia four way intersection particularly the one flowing from Gaborone to Francistown and vice versa which impeded the one from Oodi/Mmamashia and water treatment plant from crossing the road .
Mr Mabiletsa asked the minister whether he will consider installing traffic signals to control the traffic flow and to minimise risk to motorists and pedestrians crossing the road. ENDS
