Lekwete Captain Rebrands To Mark New Chapter
09 Feb 2026
Masaka Masaka, formerly known as Lekwete Captain in the entertainment industry has rebranded to LeCap to mark a new chapter in his musical journey.
The Afro-pop sensation said the change was necessary to clear up confusion among fans and strengthen his brand identity. The name Lekwete Captain often led to mix-ups, with some calling him Captain Lekwete or confusing him with Captain Dira, the music kingpin behind the hit Matalanyane.
“People were asking, ‘Who is this Captain? Is he Captain Dira? The name was also too long and costly for merchandise and I shortened it to LeCap, ‘Le’ from Lekwete and ‘Cap’ from Captain,” he said.LeCap’s love for music began in Francistown at the Spiritual Healing Church, encouraged by his sister Barulaganye Masaka.
His talent shone early in junior school, where he formed a boys’ choir. By 2005, he was a DJ, entertaining at weddings, birthdays, and bars.
In 2008, LeCap’s career took off when he met Kitso Machauza of Nice Cut Productions, who became his longtime producer alongside Molly Matiha. A year later, he formed the house-kwasa crew Mactivators, releasing their debut album Number Number in 2010.
Though the group eventually split, LeCap pressed on, later co-founding Makwete Music Group with Tshepo Adam and Tshepo Gouwe. Their hit Sthandwa captivated audiences nationwide before the group disbanded in 2015.
LeCap went solo, releasing his first album, Re Mono Fela in 2016, which earned nominations at the Botswana Music Union (BOMU) Awards.
The album also attracted international attention, especially in South Africa. He followed up with the single Delete in 2017 and the acclaimed album Turn Around in 2019, which expanded his reach to Lesotho.
The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted his momentum, but LeCap adapted by launching the Producer Challenge with Machauza and the Nice Cut Productions team.
He continued releasing albums, including Mmadiphunkgi, Ga Ke Dumele, Letheka, Lala Mhantjana, a tribute to Kgosdi Maburu, Khumbul’ekhaya, Mosadimogolo wa Moloi Remix, and Puo Phaa.
LeCap has collaborated with local and international artists, including DJ BaNg (Kedi, Thohonolofatsa), Elle Mwana ka Chokwe from Namibia (Sphononol), and South Africa’s Dr Nel (Thandiwe). His singles Gopo Lame, Ka Moithatela, and Ndipe Rudo further cemented his reputation.
In 2025, LeCap returned with his latest album, Ke Nako, featuring a lineup of renowned musicians from Botswana and beyond. The album is already enjoying success on both local and international stages. BOPA
