Botswana Racewars slated for February

15 Jan 2026

The annual Botswana Racewars drag racing, will now be held on February and August as a Motorsport SADC region calendar event.

Hosted by Maverick Motorsport Botswana in conjunction with Rhyno’s Torque Show, this year’s event is slated for February 7, in Lobatse.

The action-packed race, usually staged in August and December in Lobatse, will now be held in February and August every year, said event organiser Joseph Khengere of Maverick Motorsport Botswana in an interview on Tuesday.

He said that a decision was made to move the Botswana’s December event to February to make it a year opener amongst the Southern African Development Community member states.

“This date is favourable, because  racers will be excited for the first race of the year unlike  when it is held in between the year when other similar events have already been held in other countries,” he said.

He said the event which was slated for December 13 last year was postponed due to heavy rainfall adding that it gave organisers to plan better and  reach a conclusion with other neighbouring countries to officially move the motorsport event to February and August respectively.

Khengere highlighted that the aim was to accommodate all stakeholders and ensure maximum participation, and deliver a great showdown to supporters.

The event will showcase a vast selection of modified cars which include Mercedes AMG, AUDI RS5/3, BMW M5, Porsche 911 amongst others, which will race on a 500 meters road stretch. The 2024 defending champion, BMW Dracular 2.0 is also scheduled to participate.

So far drivers who have confirmed participation12 Batswana, 15 from South Africa, five from Lesotho, three from Zimbabwe, and 1 driver from Namibia.

Additionally, he said as part of driving local empowerment, this year the event organisers have introduced ‘Sejana sa Toropo’ to award Lobatse fastest drivers during the races to empower  drivers in line with grooming local motorsport talent.

Regarding the postponed Botswana Racewars, he said all tickets purchased remained valid for the new date of February 7, adding that ticket sales was still on. He thus encouraged supporters to buy tickets worth P120 to relish the thrilling high-speed drag race Botswana Racewars motorsport action. BOPA
