Mobile telephony company Orange Botswana, through their product Orange Money, have donated sets of kits and footballs to the 2026 edition of Matlolapata Games.
The games are scheduled for Friday, January 2 at Solomon Dihutso ground in Mogoditshane.
Orange Money Product Officer, Kabelo Moloigaswe explained during the handover ceremony on Wednesday that the donation comprising playing kits as well as training bibs accompanying each kit, with merchandise for officials and soccer balls, was to the tune of around P20,000.
“This is an annual tournament that brings people together, and since we have a good customer base in Mogoditshane this is how we are giving back to the community. We want to start a relationship with Matlolapata and to assess how we could continue in future. Also, we are looking to promote our product, Duela Easy, which targets small businesses, enabling them to transact without holding cash,” Moloigaswe said.
On behalf of Matlolapata Organising Committee, Kehumile “Shuffle” Kgoroba said they were pleased that Orange had recognised their annual tournament, which he described as the country’s biggest community social football tournament.
“We are proud to be associated with a big brand such as Orange, we always draw big crowds and it will be a good platform for them to market their products while giving back to the community,” Kgoroba said.
He detailed that Matlolapata was founded in 1992 by a group of Mogoditshane youth of the time, including himself, his brother Sedirwa “Chilly” Kgoroba, Aaron “Route 4” Radira, Andrew Mosarwe, Kegomoditswe Sefudi, and Thato Baeti among others and the tournament has continued to grow in leaps and bounds over the past 33 years.
Kgoroba explained that since Molepolole Road dissects Mogoditshane into two sides, the residents of either end of the road are organised into the Matlolapata East and West teams that compete on the day.
“Each side brings seven teams, under 15, under 17, under 20, ladies team, junior masters, senior masters and the main team and compete over seven matches. Each side alternates to host; the West hosted at Mogoditshane Fighters ground in early January this year; and in the New Year we are going to Dihutso on Friday as the East will host,” he said. BOPA
