Search continues for woman grabbed by crocodile

29 Dec 2025

A search operation is ongoing to locate a 26-year-old woman feared to have been snatched by a crocodile along the river bank in Kauxwi on Sunday.

Station Commander for Shakawe Police Station Superintendent Alec Keikwaletse said in an interview on Monday that they received a report from a 25-year-old Kauxwi man on Sunday, who reported that the attack occurred when he and the woman were near the river.

He said according to the man the incident occurred when he was out on a leisure outing on a river island with the woman, who is his partner. Supt. Keikwaletse said the man stated that though he tried to rescue the woman, the reptile overpowered him and dragged her into deep waters.

He said they started the search operation on Sunday with the support of community members and personnel from the Botswana Defence Force and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks.

“As of now, the woman has not been found and the search is still ongoing,” he said.

He said crocodile attacks remained a recurring concern in riverine communities such as Shakawe, where residents lived, worked and conducted daily activities close to water bodies.

“These incidents happen frequently in this area and we continue to urge members of the public, especially those living near the river, to exercise extreme caution when approaching water for any reason,” he said.

Supt. Keikwaletse further advised the public to remain alert at all times and to avoid riverbanks which dangerous animals like crocodiles and hippos were known to inhabit, particularly during times when visibility was low or when water levels were high. BOPA
